As I said in the commentary, the southwest slowed me way down. I was a a little "disappointed" that NYMPHS was actually used in another clue in the puzzle, but put it down to "charm" :) And YOUNG BIRD, without NYMPH, I may not have gotten it.

Hard luck Liz. if it's any consolation I was stuck on those 2 clues and left them for a few hours and came back to it. Wasn't really happy putting in NYMPHS and even toyed with SYLPHS. I didn't really expect the answer to be sitting in the other clue but it game me the Y for YOUNG that I wouldn't have gotten otherwise.

I just didn't think for a minute that the word in the clue for 18d would be the solution to 25d...shoulda! Ah well, r00ow...not as if I haven't been there before!

I think that's one of the great thing about crosswords, the learning opportunity. Even words that I "know", sometimes I am only just familiar with, and so a quick lookup solidifies things in my mind. One of my favorite things to do when writing the Blog post each day, is researching the Lookup. How many people out there, do you think, really know what a tantara is? :)

Learnt 2 new words again today but at least I did it without failing to finish the crossword. Hadn't come across AWN withing ING added and only ever knew NYMPHS as woodland spirits. As they say - you learn something new every day!

I've been in the habit of playing the Aria collection (from the links on the left) randomly as I work away on the computer. I've been thinking of dividing them into "mellow" and "crank up the volume". Much better listening experience.

Welcome back to r1ow. Sounds like you had a less challenging time than I had in the southwest. I agree, YOUNG BIRD was the "vague" clue of the day. But still, gettable, and that's the main thing.

I'm glad to get back to winning ways today.
YOUNG BIRD was a bit vague but the other letters pointed me in the right direction.
Other than that it was fairly straightforward.

I loved the WHO aria Bill.
My 'Who's Next' Box set had to be dusted down and I've been playing it on the car stereo all morning while driving. Yeah it does have to be played with the volume cranked up to eleven, though I've noticed a lot of people staring at me as I drive by. Wonder why that is?
